Filename List

Paste a list of filenames (one per line) to find duplicates instantly.

Free Duplicate Filename Finder

Find duplicate filenames in any list. Paste names or upload a text file and the tool groups every collision with its occurrence count — ideal for cleaning up messy download folders, merging archives, or auditing backups before you copy files into one directory.

Flexible Matching

Matching is case-insensitive by default but can be made case-sensitive, and you can choose to ignore extensions when comparing. A minimum-occurrence filter lets you focus on the worst collisions.

Instant, Private Reports

Summary statistics and grouped duplicates render instantly. Copy the report or download it as a .txt file — all processing is local and offline.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Duplicate Filename Finder

What counts as a duplicate filename?

By default, matching is case-insensitive and ignores leading/trailing whitespace, so "Report.pdf" and "report.PDF" are treated as the same name. Enable "Case-sensitive" to distinguish them, or "Ignore extensions" to compare names without their extensions.

How is the result presented?

The tool shows summary stats (total names, unique names, duplicate groups, duplicate instances) and lists each duplicate group with its occurrence count and every instance of the name, so you can see at a glance which files collide.

Can I copy or save the report?

Yes — Copy Report copies the full text summary, and Download Report saves it as a .txt file you can keep alongside the folder you are cleaning up.

What does "Min occurrences" do?

It filters the results by how many times a name must appear to be reported. The default is 2+ (any duplicate), but you can raise it to 3+, 4+, or 5+ to focus only on the most severe collision cases.

Is this the same as finding duplicate file contents?

No. This tool finds duplicate filenames in a list you provide. It does not compare file contents — two identically named files in different folders may still contain different data. For content-level deduplication you would need to compare checksums, which the File Checksum Generator can help with.

Is my file list uploaded anywhere?

No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser. Paste a list or upload a text file and everything is processed locally, fully offline.
