Checksum algorithms

Drop files above to compute their checksums. MD5 and SHA-1 are fast; SHA-256/SHA-512 are cryptographically stronger.

Free File Checksum Generator — MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 & SHA-512

Welcome to the UtilixVerse File Checksum Generator — a free, browser-based tool that computes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512digests for any file, entirely offline. Drag and drop one or more files, pick your algorithms, and copy any digest with one click. A built-in verifier lets you paste a publisher’s checksum and instantly confirm whether your download is authentic.

Why Checksums Matter

Software vendors publish checksums so you can prove a download arrived intact and untampered. Hashing is one-way: the same file always produces the same fingerprint, but the fingerprint reveals nothing about the contents. This makes checksums the standard tool for integrity verification, backup validation, and detecting accidental corruption in large files.

Privacy First

All hashing runs locally via the Web Crypto API plus a built-in JavaScript MD5 — your files are never uploaded, making this tool safe for sensitive documents and fully functional without an internet connection.

Frequently Asked Questions About the File Checksum Generator

What is a file checksum?

A checksum is a fixed-length fingerprint computed from the contents of a file. Any change to the file — even a single bit — produces a completely different checksum. Checksums are used to verify that a download was not corrupted or tampered with during transfer, and to confirm that two files are bit-for-bit identical.

Which algorithm should I use — MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256?

For verifying downloads and general integrity checks, SHA-256 is the best all-purpose choice: it is fast, hardware-accelerated, and cryptographically strong. MD5 and SHA-1 are faster but have known collision weaknesses, so they should not be used where an attacker could deliberately craft a matching file. The tool computes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 so you can match whatever checksum a publisher provides.

Is this tool private? Do my files get uploaded?

No. Every checksum is computed inside your browser using the Web Crypto API and a built-in pure-JavaScript MD5 implementation. Your files never leave your device — the tool works fully offline and is safe for hashing sensitive documents.

How do I verify a downloaded file with this tool?

Drop the downloaded file into the tool, note its SHA-256 (or whichever) checksum, then paste the checksum published on the website into the "Expected checksum" box and press Compare. A green Match badge means the file is authentic and intact; a red Mismatch means it was corrupted or modified.

Can checksums detect intentionally tampered files?

Against accidental corruption, yes — MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 all detect any change reliably. Against a deliberate attacker, you should use a collision-resistant hash such as SHA-256 or SHA-512 (never plain MD5 or SHA-1) and obtain the expected checksum from a trusted, ideally separate, channel.

How are checksums for large files computed?

The file is read into memory as a binary buffer and hashed in one pass per selected algorithm. Files of tens of megabytes complete almost instantly; extremely large files may take a few seconds. For multi-gigabyte files, consider hashing on your own machine with a native tool for speed.
