Free File Metadata Viewer — Size, Type & Dates

View file metadata — size, type, extension, dates, and more — for any file, right in your browser. Drop in a batch and each file gets a detail card showing its size in bytes, MIME type, last-modified timestamp, and a type identified from its magic bytes rather than its extension.

Magic-Byte Type Detection

The browser’s MIME type can be wrong or generic. This viewer reads the actual file signature to recognize PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, PDF, ZIP, RAR, 7Z, MP3, MP4, fonts, and more — even when the extension is missing or misleading. Image dimensions are reported for picture files.

Private & Offline

Metadata extraction happens entirely on your device. Copy a JSON summary or download it — nothing is ever uploaded, and the tool works fully offline.

Frequently Asked Questions About the File Metadata Viewer

What file metadata is shown?

For every file you drop in, the tool displays the name, full path, size in bytes (and human-readable form), MIME type, file extension, last-modified date, and a type detected from the file signature. For image files it also reports the pixel dimensions.

How does type detection work?

In addition to the MIME type reported by the browser, the tool reads the file's magic bytes — the first bytes of the file — to identify common formats such as PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, PDF, ZIP, GZIP, RAR, 7Z, MP3, MP4, and fonts. This works even when a file has a wrong or missing extension.

Why is the detected type better than the MIME type?

The MIME type comes from the operating system or browser and can be wrong or generic (like application/octet-stream). Magic-byte detection looks at the actual content, so it tells you what the file really is regardless of its extension.

Can I view metadata for multiple files at once?

Yes — select several files in the picker or drag and drop a batch. Each file gets its own card, and you can also drop more files later to append them to the list.

Can I export the metadata?

Yes. Copy JSON copies a machine-readable summary of every file to the clipboard, and Download JSON saves it as a .json file — handy for inventorying folders or building reports.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. Metadata extraction and magic-byte analysis run entirely in your browser. Files are read locally and never transmitted, and the tool works fully offline.
