Fair, Balanced Teams Every Time

The tool shuffles every name and then deals them round-robin across your teams, so the group sizes differ by at most one member — the fairest possible split. Nobody is left out and no team gets overloaded. Prefer chaos? Flip off Balanced Sizes and let team sizes vary randomly instead.

Names can come in as one per line, or separated bycommas or semicolons. Blank lines are ignored, extra spaces are tidied up, and duplicates are removed automatically so nobody ends up on two teams. Frequently Asked Questions About the Team Generator

How does the Team Generator divide people?

Every name is shuffled randomly first, then dealt out round-robin across the teams you asked for. That guarantees a fair split where team sizes differ by at most one member — nobody is left stranded, and no team ends up overloaded. Turn off “Balanced Sizes” if you would rather let team sizes vary randomly.

Can I choose the number of teams — or the size of each team?

Both. Switch to “Number of Teams” mode and use the stepper to pick anywhere from 2 to 20 teams, or switch to “Members per Team” mode to cap each team at a set size (2–20 people). The tool instantly estimates how many teams your name list will produce before you even generate.

What formats can I paste names in?

Almost anything. Type or paste one name per line, or separate names with commas or semicolons — the tool understands them all. Names are trimmed and cleaned automatically, blank lines are ignored, and exact duplicates (case-insensitive) are removed so nobody appears on two teams. Up to 200 unique names are supported.

Can I re-shuffle the same group?

Yes — that is the whole point. Click Re-shuffle (or just press the Space bar) to keep the exact same names and settings while the tool deals a brand new random split. Great for rerunning a draw, mixing up seating for the next round, or letting fate decide a second time.

Can I copy or download the teams?

Yes. The Export panel lets you copy the entire split as clean plain text with one click, or download it as a .txt file to share, print, or paste into a spreadsheet. Every team is listed with its member count and each member on its own line.

Is the Team Generator free and private?

It is 100% free with no registration, and everything runs entirely in your browser — no data is ever sent to a server. Your name list, settings, and split history are stored only in your browser’s localStorage, so your next visit starts exactly where you left off, and you can clear the history at any time.

Does it work on mobile and offline?

Yes. The tool is fully responsive — the textarea, steppers, and team cards adapt to any screen size — and it works completely offline with no downloads. It also respects the “reduce motion” accessibility setting by skipping the long shuffle animation while still generating instantly.
