Free Online YAML Formatter — Beautify, Validate & Clean YAML

Welcome to the UtilixVerse YAML formatter — a free, browser-basedYAML beautifier that turns misaligned, inconsistent YAML into clean, uniformly indented output in real time. Whether you are tidying adocker-compose.yml, a GitHub Actions workflow, aKubernetes manifest, or any configuration file, this tool normalizes indentation, validates structure, and can strip comments and blank lines — without ever uploading your data anywhere.

How Our YAML Formatter Works

Paste your YAML into the input panel and the output updates live as you type. The tool parses block mappings (key: value), block sequences (- item), and their nesting, then re-serializes with your chosen indentation (2 or 4 spaces). ToggleKeep comments to preserve or strip # notes, and switch to Compact mode to remove comments and blank lines in one click. Copy the result, download it as a .yaml file, or import an existing file directly into the editor.

YAML Building Blocks

YAML is built from just a few constructs — and the formatter handles all of them:

name: UtilixVerse — mappings (key/value pairs)
- developer — sequences (lists of items)
# note — comments (ignored, optional)
"quoted" | 'scalar' — quoted strings
key: | — literal block scalars
key: [1, 2] — flow collections

YAML also supports anchors (&defaults),aliases (*defaults), andtags (!!str) for advanced reuse — all preserved by the formatter.

Common YAML Errors & How to Fix Them

  • • Tabs in indentation — YAML forbids tabs; convert them to spaces.
  • • Inconsistent sibling indentation — all entries at one level must share the same indent.
  • • Mixing lists and maps — you cannot put - item and key: value at the same level.
  • • Scalar followed by a nested block — a value like key: 1 cannot have indented children.
  • • Unclosed quotes or flow — every "/' and {/[ needs its closer.

Formatted vs. Compact YAML

Formatted mode normalizes indentation while keeping your comments — ideal for code review, documentation, anddebugging. Compact mode strips comments and blank lines for the tightest readable version, which matters when trimming configs forCI/CD or deployment. Both modes show live stats forkeys, sequence items, comments, nesting depth, lines, characters, and bytes.

Your data never leaves your device — this is a 100% private, free YAML formatter. Pair it with our JSON formatter,XML formatter, andJSON validator for a complete developer toolkit.

Frequently Asked Questions About YAML Formatting

What is a YAML formatter and how does it work?

A YAML formatter takes hard-to-read YAML and re-indents every mapping and sequence so the document structure is instantly visible. Our free online YAML formatter parses the dominant block constructs (mappings, sequences, nested indentation, quoted scalars, flow collections, block scalars, anchors, and comments), checks that the indentation is consistent, and re-serializes with clean, uniform indentation. It can also produce a compact version with comments and blank lines removed.

Is this YAML formatter safe to use with sensitive data?

Yes — 100% private. All parsing, formatting, and validation is performed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is ever uploaded to a server, so configuration files (docker-compose.yml, .github/workflows, Kubernetes manifests, Ansible playbooks, CI/CD pipelines) and API samples are safe to paste. The tool even works offline after the page has loaded, and your input is stored only in your own browser for convenience.

Why is YAML indentation so important?

Unlike JSON and XML, YAML uses indentation to define structure — the nesting of every mapping and sequence is determined by spaces alone. Inconsistent indentation is the most common source of YAML errors: a key indented by three spaces while its siblings use two usually breaks the document or silently changes its meaning. Our formatter normalizes indentation to a single consistent width (2 or 4 spaces) and flags mixed indentation so your file is always structurally predictable.

Does this tool support anchors, aliases, and tags?

Yes. Anchors (&name) and aliases (*name) — used to reuse blocks of configuration — are preserved verbatim, as are explicit tags (!!str, !custom) and merge keys (<<: *anchor). The formatter keeps them attached to the correct value while re-indenting the surrounding structure, so reusable config stays reusable.

Why does my YAML show an error at a specific line?

The most common causes of YAML errors are: tabs used for indentation (tabs are not allowed), inconsistent indentation between sibling entries, mixing sequence items and mapping entries at the same level, a scalar value followed by an unexpected nested block, an unclosed quoted string, or an unclosed flow collection (missing } or ]). Our formatter highlights the offending line so you can fix it quickly.

What is the difference between Formatted and Compact mode?

Formatted mode re-indents your YAML with clean, consistent spacing while preserving comments and document markers. Compact mode removes comments and blank lines, producing the tightest readable version — useful for trimming config files before sharing or embedding. Both modes keep block scalars (| and >) and their content intact, since that content is significant.

Does the formatter handle multi-line values like block scalars and flow collections?

Yes. Literal (|) and folded (>) block scalars are preserved with their content indentation normalized, and flow collections ({ ... } and [ ... ]) that span multiple lines are folded into a single line with consistent spacing. Quoted strings that span lines are also merged correctly. The output stays valid YAML that parses to the same data.

Is this YAML formatter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no registration, no sign-up, no premium tier, and no data collection. All formatting happens locally on your device. Pair it with our JSON formatter, JSON validator, and XML formatter to cover all your structured-data needs in one place.

How to Use the YAML Formatter

Format, validate, and clean up YAML — the config format used by Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, and CI pipelines. Turn a messy, misindented YAML block into consistent, readable output.

Step-by-Step

  1. 1Paste your YAML document.
  2. 2The formatter normalises indentation, spacing, and list formatting.
  3. 3Invalid YAML reports the offending line instead of silently breaking later.
Tip: YAML is whitespace-sensitive — keep tabs out and use consistent spaces. The formatter fixes indentation inconsistencies automatically.
